One of the most respected and reputed Neurophysicians in the country and internationally, Dr. Bhim Sen Singhal has etched a place for himself in the history of the medical field. Currently, Director of Neurology at Bombay Hospital, Dr. Singhal has, in the past, been Professor and Head for the Departments of Neurology at Bombay Hospital, at Grant Medical College and at Sir. J. J. Group of Hospitals. Being a member, as well as having headed several National and International Societies and research committees, Dr. Singhal has also been associated with the Working Groups for Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis of the WHO. He is currently associated with the Mumbai Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Dr. Singhal also has keen bearings in the area of research and publication, with over 200 articles, chapters, and research papers to his credit. His excellent work has led him to be bestowed with several awards over the years, including the Dr. B. C. Roy National Award for development of Neurology in India in 1999; the Wockhardt Award for Medical Excellence in Neurology [organized by the Harvard Medical International] in 2005; the Dhanvantri award in 2009; and the R. D. Birla National award in 2013.
With more than 60 years of experience in the field of Neurology, he is a force to reckon with, and age has not slowed him down. The main brain behind the PDMDS, Dr. Singhal, set up the Society, with other like – minded professionals in 2001. Keenly interested in people suffering from Neurological conditions and their care beyond medications, Dr. Singhal started the society with the aim of providing holistic health care and management to People with Parkinson’s. His exemplary work and repute has led the PDMDS to where it stands today and where it will go in the future.
Dr. Jimmy Lalkaka, a specialist in Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders, has been a strong force in PDMDS since its inception. Having been interested in the plight of people suffering from a lifelong illness like Parkinson’s and other movement disorders, he, along with the other founders was instrumental in setting up the PDMDS. Currently, a consultant Neurophysician at Saifee Hospital, Mumbai & consulting Neurophysician at Bombay Hospital, Mumbai & Parsi General Hospital, Mumbai, Dr. Lalkaka is avidly involved in the work of the society, being the editor of the newsletter ‘Movement’, as well as, the Treasurer of the Society. Dr. Lalkaka says his association with PDMDS is very fulfilling as he has observed the multi – disciplinary interventions aiding PwPs. Music, theatre and Sports are Dr. Lalkaka’s interests beyond his work hours.
Dr. Charulata Sankhla is one of the founding members of the PDMDS. Currently, a consulting Neurophysician at P. D. Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai, Dr. Sankhla is academically inclined and has several research publications and international conference presentations to her name. Dr. Sankhla has always been keenly interested in Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders, having obtained a Fellowship in the same from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, U.S.A. She says her motivation to work with PDMDS is to contribute to integrated support to PwPs. In her free time, Dr. Sankhla is a keen reader and loves trekking.
Dr. Pettarusp Wadia, a Consultant Neurophysician at Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai & Parsi General Hospital, Mumbai, has brought in a young zeal to the PDMDS. He believes that dedicating his time to PDMDS, gives him the opportunity to contribute to improving the quality of life of person’s with Parkinson’s, as well as, to reach out to those who do not have access to good health care. Dr. Wadia has several research projects and clinical trials to his name, as well as published research papers, abstracts and presentations, a number of which have been prize – winning at prestigious conferences. Dr. Wadia’s main interest in the field of Neurology has been Parkinsonian conditions and Movement Disorders, and he obtained a Fellowship in the same from University of Toronto, Canada. Dr. Wadia loves Poetry, Reading and undertaking travel to a variety of places.
Dr. Maria Barretto, currently CEO of the PDMDS, has over 30 years of experience in the field of psychology and education. Having worked with the UNICEF, she brings a vast experience to PDMDS, and has been instrumental in taking a multidisciplinary model of Parkinson’s care to the affected Indian masses in a group therapy format. In her own words, “I have been blessed with a career that gives me the opportunity to be a part of the lives of people who have been challenged in different ways. In the past 10 years of my career I have been involved in developing and managing the Parkinson’s Society and I have gained much more than I have given.” Dr. Barretto further adds that seeing the resilience displayed by PwPs, teaches her to not take the aspect of health for granted.
Dr. Barretto has been the face of the society, since her association with PDMDS began in 2004. She has represented the society at many international conferences and forums; and in recognition of her excellent work in improving the quality of life of individuals with Parkinson’s, she has been bestowed with the Dr. Rana International Parkinson’s Community Service award in 2011.
In the society’s journey from its inception to where it currently stands, there have been several professionals and experts, who have whole – heartedly extended their support & proficiency to the Society’s activities. The Society acknowledges there compassion and co – operation.
