In 2005, what started as a small 2 member group in Borivali, Mumbai, today, extends to multiple locations in Western India. PDMDS currently runs twelve group therapy centres in Mumbai, two in Goa, one in Nasik, and one in Bhavnagar(Gujarat) in collaboration with the B.K.Parekh Welfare Trust.
These groups are of two kinds – Physiotherapy Groups and Support Groups, and are free of cost.
At the Physiotherapy Groups, group exercise sessions are conducted. This exercise program consists of exercises specifically designed to manage and improve the symptoms of Parkinson’s. Strategies are taught to enhance the ease with which they perform their daily activities.
Support Groups, are a platform for PwPs and caregivers to be introduced to a wide array of information about medical and para – medical disciplines and its professionals related to Parkinson’s [Speech Therapy, Diet & Nutrition, Dance and Movement Therapy, Cognitive Activities etc]. In addition to this, the PwPs are also given the opportunity to further enrich their lives and utilize their time optimally through creative and hands – on activities, such as arts and crafts, dance and music, cognitive rehabilitation, etc. You may join our Support Centres here
A noteworthy and unique characteristic about both these groups is the prospect of interface that is offered amongst PwPs and their caregivers. Getting to interact with others in a situation similar to their own is believed to assist people with various anomalies to deal with and overcome stress, and emerge as stronger individuals.
